Professor Center manager

Leif Østergaard is a trained physician and astronomer.

He works both as  Professor Neurology Researchers play an important role in the field of neurological research. With in-depth knowledge of the functions and diseases of the nervous system, they contribute to the understanding of complex neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis. Research in neurology leads to new treatments and improvements in patient care. Researchers often work across disciplines, collaborate with clinical experts and publish results in recognized scientific journals. Through their work, they contribute to a better quality of life for patients with neurological disorders and thus positively influence the healthcare system. Neurology is a complex and fascinating field of medicine that focuses on diseases and disorders of the nervous system. Current professors of neurology make significant contributions to research and treatment that improve patients' quality of life. They often work at universities and research institutions, where they explore topics such as neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, and migraine. Through clinical research and publications in scientific journals, they share new knowledge and insights that can lead to innovative treatment methods. Furthermore, they are committed to educating future doctors and specialists, ensuring that the next generation of neurologists is well-trained and compassionate.  for the 'Center for Functional Integrative Neuroscience' (CFIN) at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, and as a senior physician at the Department of Neuroradiology, X-ray and Scanning, Aarhus University Hospital.

Leif researches the causes of serious brain diseases. His research results have contributed to improving diagnostics and treatment of, among other things, blood clots in the brain, as well as to a new understanding of dementia.

In 2016, Leif Østergaard's book 'The Brain' was published in the series 'Thinking Breaks' by Aarhus University Press. The book will be published in English in 2023.

Leif Østergaard has given the lecture 'How does the brain work?' in the autumn semester 2016 and an updated version of the lecture with the same title 'How does the brain work?' in the autumn semester 2023.
